The Christmas Holidays at Disney’s Animal Kingdom 2023 – Christmas Cheer Meets Wildlife Adventure!

The Christmas holidays are an extra magical time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Every year during the holiday season, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, blending everyday Disney magic with a unique twist on yuletide festivities. If you’re lucky enough to have a wintertime Disney trip, you’ll definitely want to ensure Disney’s Animal Kingdom is part of your holly-jolly itinerary!

A Holiday Twist on the Tree of Life Awakenings

The holiday celebration begins the moment you walk into the park.

The Tree of Life Awakenings stands at the entrance of Animal Kingdom, a majestic sentinel of all seasons. It welcomes visitors to the park every day, but during the holidays, it also becomes an enchanting Christmastime centerpiece for the entire park. It’s not your traditional Douglas fir, but it’s definitely the most magical Christmas tree you’ll ever find!

Every evening after dark, the tree shimmers and sparkles in time to a stirring holiday soundtrack, illuminating the park with the sights and sounds of Christmas. It makes for a truly unique storytelling medium, and this tree certainly has some tales to tell! With a mesmerizing style, the tree will share wintertime vignettes that will warm your heart. We’re excited it’s been confirmed to return for 2023.

Keep in mind that the projections only start after it gets dark. So if the park closes before sunset, you won’t be able to see the shows. If you’re visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom during the holidays and are counting on the Awakenings as part of your holiday experience, make sure you check sunset times to confirm you’ll be able to enjoy this aspect of the holiday experience. You don’t want to miss out on it!

All Decked Out for the Christmas Holidays

As you cross the bridge to Discovery Island, you’ll find it sparkling with delightful holiday decorations.

Garlands are elegantly draped over doorways, and wreaths hang prettily from the buildings, adding an extra bit of Christmas cheer everywhere you look! (Animal Kingdom has really stepped up their holiday game in recent years!)

In fact, everywhere you turn, you’ll be greeted by an array of colorful patterns. It’s pretty easy to guess what inspired some of the décor – the lovely resident critters of the Animal Kingdom, of course! The bird lanterns and rooftop luminaries across the park are particularly enchanting. We also love how the flowery garlands and paper lanterns in the Asia area are reminiscent of those you’d see for festivals in India.

You might want to take some time to grab a treat and explore, just admiring the decorations. If you’re on a tight schedule, it’s okay to enjoy them in passing, too. We know how hectic a day at Disney can be!

We should note that in past years, DinoLand USA, Pandora, and several other Animal Kingdom locations have had special holiday decorations. It changes annually, so you’ll have a unique backdrop for your Christmas memories each and every year!

A Merry Menagerie on Discovery Island

Take to Discovery Island for a whimsical wonderland celebration featuring life-sized, artisan-sculpted animal puppets. Once again, the 2023 performance promises to feature adorable arctic animals like penguins, foxes, reindeer, and polar bears! (Can I earn a Wilderness Explorer badge if I find them all??)

Oh, but I didn’t even tell you the best part yet! Many times, you’re allowed to pet them like real animals! Each creature is accompanied by serenading musicians who interact with guests for even more holiday fun.

Whipping up a batch of your own cookies is a piece of cake. (Is it okay to use a cake metaphor in an article about cookies??) Whether you’re sending a message of “I love you” to your family, friends, or yourself, Christmas gingerbread men make the best delivery men!

Watch the Water Parade Float By Jingling All the Way

Get comfy along the banks of Discovery River to watch the holiday water parade! Initially an invention of safe distancing, the water parade flotillas are now a favorite staple of Animal Kingdom holiday festivities! (As of writing, we are still waiting on official confirmation for 2023.)

During the winter season, each flotilla gets a holiday makeover with new decorations and outfits for every character. For example, Mickey switches out his khaki safari Animal Kingdom shirt for something a little more merry! You’ll definitely want to catch a glimpse of the gang in their holiday best!

The flotillas circle the entire length of Discovery River, so you can see them just about anywhere along the river, waving hello to your favorite characters as you explore. The floats appear randomly throughout the day, but you can check the My Disney Experience app to find out the water parade’s ETA.

Checking beforehand is a great way to plan your experience and make sure you don’t miss out on any of your favorite characters when they float by, especially if you’re only spending a short time along Discovery River. (Or you can just show up and let it be a pleasant surprise, whoever you get to see!)

But just because you can see the flotillas all along the river doesn’t mean every vantage point is equally advantageous. We recommend camping out at the boardwalk bridge that runs between Pandora and Port of Harambe. The bridge dips low and gets close to the water, so you’ll get a closer look at your favorite characters and their flotillas as they pass by. Keep in mind, though, that this area is closed off if the Avatar Flight of Passage line gets long, so be prepared to relocate if that happens.

The former Rivers of Light stadium seating area is another great spot. It’s open to all guests, so you can sit and wait as long as you’d like. This is the perfect spot if you’ve been running around the park all day and are ready for a break. Get some rest, put your feet up, and enjoy a snack while you wait for Mickey and Santa to pass by on the river!

The traditional line-up of flotillas includes favorites like…

  • Donald’s Dino-Bash: Donald Duck and all his friends celebrate the holiday on the water, greeting everyone on the shore as they mosey down Discovery River.
  • Chip & Dale Holiday Flotilla: You’ll catch yourself grooving right along to Chip ‘n’ Dale’s festive tunes as their flotilla sails by, jingling through the jungle to the best beats of the holidays.
  • Discovery Island Drummers Flotilla: A spirited group of percussionists and drummers cruising along the river provides sweet beats and exciting drumlines for all to hear. A true highlight of the parade!

#Protip: If you plan your trip to Discovery River around mealtime, stop by the Flame Tree Barbecue! They have seating right by the water where the flotillas pass by, so you can chow down on a great barbecue meal while you wait for Santa, Donald, and Chip ‘n’ Dale to arrive!

Santa Claus

Rumor has it that Santa Claus will be back in Animal Kingdom for the 2023 Christmas season, though whether that’s waving from his own flotilla in the water parade, in a stationary meet and greet area, or both, is yet to be confirmed. Either way, we’re happy to know Kris Kringle should be getting in on the action!

Meet and Greets

In DinoLand, Donald Duck traditionally holds a “Dino-Bash” where you and the fam can grab some fun holiday photos with him, Daisy, and Chip and Dale! Each character will be dressed in their festive best – but with a dinosaur twist!

You can also enjoy a photo-op with holiday-attired Mickey and Minnie at Adventurer’s Outpost! (Confirmed for 2023!)

Snacks and Shows

While the water parade and Merry Menagerie are certainly the main draw to an Animal Kingdom Christmastime visit, you can also expect a few live shows throughout the park, such as drummers in Africa and a sitar player in Asia.

There are also sweet seasonal treats offered at Animal Kingdom, with the menu getting tweaked a little every year. We’re excited to see what delights await us for 2023!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is always a magical place – with animals, how could it not be?? – but it takes on a whole new level of magic during the holidays! We definitely recommend going on a festive safari for a truly wild Christmas!
