How To Make Homemade Pop Tarts — Enjoy This Amazing Copycat Treat From Woody’s Lunchbox Anytime, Anywhere!

Walt Disney World is famous for fantastic food, and one of the best sweet treats you can find in the parks is at Woody’s Lunchbox. We’re talking about Woody’s homemade pop tarts, of course!

Located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Woody’s Lunch Box is an homage to the Toy Story franchise, as well as the taste of nostalgia. Serving up classic American comfort foods in a setting that shrinks you down to the size of a toy, it’s another one of Disney’s fantastically unique dining experiences.

Of course, the highlight of any meal is dessert, and at Woody’s Lunch Box, that means homemade pop tarts! A staple of any kid’s breakfast, pop tarts are fitting for a restaurant surrounded by giant animal crackers and towering sticks of celery.

But these aren’t just any pop tarts. Woody serves up gourmet pastries stuffed with chocolate hazelnut, blueberry, or raspberry marmalade filling, each topped with a frosting that perfectly compliments what’s on the inside. Oh, and did we mention the sprinkles?

Warm, cute, and downright delicious, you’ll wish you could get these pop tarts in a 24-pack.

Well, now, you can! Kind of.

Copycat Woody’s Lunch Box Pop Tarts

While you can’t grab a box of Woody’s pop tarts off grocery store shelves, you can make them at home with our copycat recipe! And frankly, we think that’s even better. Making it at home means you’ll get the full experience of a fresh pop tart that’s completely customizable!

Quick, easy, and delicious – the best kind of homemade pop tarts!

The best part is, these gourmet pastries only take 30 minutes to make, meaning you could whip up a batch for a special breakfast whenever you want! (Or any time of day – there’s no hard and fast rules in the world of homemade pop tarts!)

In addition to being quick (because nobody wants to wait to eat these babies!), my other favorite part about this recipe is the minimal amount of dishes you’ll need to dirty in the process. Any recipe that refrains from making a mess of the entire kitchen is truly sweet!

And, if that wasn’t awesome enough, most of the ingredients, like jam, flour, powdered sugar, and cornstarch, are things you’re likely to already have stashed away in your cupboard. Even if you need to make a quick Walmart run, it might be the fastest one on record, as there are only seven ingredients total.

Let’s Get Baking!

The one thing you might not have on hand is a refrigerated pie crust, which will become the shell of your homemade pop tart. (You can also use refrigerated crescent rolls and adjust the baking time and temp, although the result will be a little less like what you get at Woody’s Lunchbox.)

Put the pie crusts down on a floury surface, then roll them out and cut them up into rectangular strips of dough usually three strips per pie crust. Plop down a good tablespoon or two of your favorite fruity jam (or go wild with Nutella!) on one side of each strip.

Set those strips aside for just a moment while you whisk an egg. Using a pastry brush, apply the egg mixture around your dollop of jam. This is going to “glue” your pastry together!

Icing and sprinkles complete these delicious breakfast pastries.

Now comes the really fun part fold the strip in half and use a fork to crimp the edges. It’s like tucking the jam into bed for a long night’s sleep, and now your pastry really looks like a pop tart! Once transferred to a baking tray, pop those tarts in the oven for about fifteen minutes (or until they look deliciously golden brown).

It’s hard to wait on something so tasty, but I like to use the baking time to clear up any mess I’ve made and get dishes washed or loaded into the dishwasher. By the time that’s done, there’s usually not much of a wait.

You can use the baking time to prepare for the final step: icing!

Once your pop tarts are out of the oven, you’ll have to wait just a little longer for them to cool. I always want to rush this part, but it’s sad when the icing dissolves and runs off the side, so, I recommend putting on your favorite Toy Story movie to pass the time. (Toy Story 2, am I right?)

After the homemade pop tarts have completely cooled, you can finally whip up that icing with your powdered sugar, half and half, and a bit of jam, then spread it over the top. You can get fancy and do a cool zig-zag design or simply cover the entire pastry with a coat of icing. It all depends on how much you care about the presentation, as well as your desired sweetness level. I always opt for more icing, even if it might not look as pretty, LOL!

As soon as your icing is on, it’s time for the best part: sprinkles!!!

And with that finishing touch, your pop tarts will truly look (and taste!) like copycat Woody’s Lunch Box pop tarts. Let’s eat!

Happy baking, everyone!

Homemade Pop Tarts

Better than the store-bought variety, these homemade pop tarts are absolutely tasty. You can switch up the jam to make any flavor you are craving. The one thing I love about these is that they are super convenient as snacks on the go (I am thinking to the theme parks).

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
