Be Gluten-Free, Guilt Free, & Worry Free at Universal Studios

When taking a trip to Universal Studios, there are probably many things that run through your mind: where to stay, what parks to visit, and what thrill rides are going to be absolute must-rides! However, if you or someone in your family suffers from a gluten allergy or intolerance, then the thought of where you can eat gluten-free safely will most likely cross your mind.

When you’re at home in your own hometown, you know all the ins and outs of finding safe food options, but when you’re traveling, especially to a theme park, it’s easy to feel a little lost about where to eat.

Universal Studios has slowly increased its allergy-friendly food protocol and variety of options over the last few years, now boasting several modifications to help those who struggle with gluten intolerances to find yummy options. Check out our guide below to learn about enjoying and eating your way through Universal Studios. Disney is no longer the only cat in town for those with gluten-free concerns!

Gluten-Free: Know Before You Go

Don’t be afraid to ask – You’d be surprised how many places are willing to accommodate but may not list gluten-free options and modifications on their menu. So, if a place to eat peaks your interest, be sure to talk to a server and have them check the ingredients book, or ask to speak to the chef. When they know there’s an allergy concern, they’re always willing to go the extra mile to help.

Pack snacks – You’re allowed to bring a small backpack into the park. If you’ve got little ones (or anyone who just gets hangry), then you know the importance of having snacks on hand! It’s a great way to have peace of mind that your snacks are safe and also to help hold off the hungry monster when you’re waiting for that must-experience ride!

Also, if you’re really concerned about the food situation while in the park, you are allowed to bring in your own food (that has to fit in a soft-sided cooler). Notify the security staff when your bag is being checked at the gate that you or someone in your family has a severe food allergy. It’s really just that simple, so don’t be intimidated!

Research and call ahead – While Universal is not as allergy-friendly as other big theme parks in Orlando, they are trying to improve their allergy protocol and the number of options available. Research the places you’d like to eat and call ahead, ask to speak to the manager and inquire about the allergy procedures and protocols. You can also email Food.Allergy@universalorlando.com and inquiry ahead of time as well.

Grab and go snacks around the park – You’ll find many grab-and-go snacks stands around the park that offer gluten-free snacks if you run out. Check for gluten-free snacks and protein bars, fruit cups, and bags of chips. The staff, again, are super friendly and want to help, so don’t be afraid to ask them to verify that a snack is gluten-free if you have questions! Kiosks are easy to find and are located throughout the park. You should have no trouble finding something that works!

Universal Studios (Including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter)

Leaky Cauldron: You’ll find several options here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many of them are not labeled as gluten-free, however, so once again you’ll have to ask. You can enjoy gluten-free pancakes (always a rare and tasty treat) and a typical American breakfast of bacon and eggs. During lunch and dinner, enjoy a grilled chicken sandwich on a gluten-free bun, roasted potatoes, salads, fresh fruit, and grilled vegetables.

Three Broomsticks: Again, you’ll find a selection of choices available here, but they’re not labeled, so you’ll need to talk to a Manager or Chef. You’ll find options like roasted chicken, ribs, salads, shepherd’s pie, and smoked turkey legs to enjoy. All delicious choices perfectly safe for those with gluten-free needs.

Butterbeer: If you’re a Harry Potter fan, then one of the things you’ll definitely want to taste while at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the famous Butterbeer. Oh, and better yet – it’s gluten-free! This delicious drink can basically be found anywhere that serves food in the Wizarding World. Although, we should note butterbeer isn’t dairy-free. Never fear though! The Pumpkin Juice is both gluten-free and dairy-free and makes for a good alternative if you need one.

Krusty Burger: While their fryer isn’t dedicated to gluten-free, they do have a gluten-free bun for burgers. This is an eatery that will depend upon how sensitive your needs are.

Lombard’s Seafood Grille: If you’re looking for an elevated lunch or dinner spot, this is it! They offer a gluten-friendly surf and turf option, plenty of grilled fish and meats, as well as some terrific salads.

Monster Café: Again, their menus aren’t labeled gluten-free, but they do have rotisserie chicken, various salads, fruit platters, and of course, the infamous turkey legs! (Turkey legs are my favorite!)

Island of Adventure

Confiscos: Have a taste for a little international flare and enjoy a sampling of flavors from around the world. Their menu has gluten-free items denoted on the menu, which is always helpful but still make sure you mention your allergy to the waiter. Here they have hummus, wings, salads, grilled fish, and even things like Pad Thai you can enjoy!

Mythos:  With a mix of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with an American twist, there are several yummy things you can eat. Enjoy Spanakoptia dip with veggies, Greek salads, Tomato soup, roasted chicken, and salmon, to name a few of the gluten-friendly options.

Volcano Bay

  • Bambu: While they don’t have gluten-free listed on their menu, they can modify things like grilled fish and chicken, grilled vegetables, salads, and fruit salads upon request.
  • Kohola Reef: Again, their menu does not denote gluten-free, but the staff is knowledgeable and can direct you to some safe options like subbing out a gluten-free bun to one of their tasty sandwiches. They also have grilled fish, vegetables, and salads to consider as well.

Universal CityWalk

Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville: This is a great option for those looking for gluten-free options! They have a gluten-free bun and recently added a dedicated gluten-free fryer for French fries. You can also enjoy other go-to gluten-free options like grilled chicken, grilled fish, and salads. But save room for dessert because they have a gluten-free brownie! That’s right gluten-free brownie. That calls for two “yums” up!

Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar: Another chain that offers gluten-free options is Cowfish. Enjoy a selection of freshly made sushi and mouth-watering burgers (bun-less or on a gluten-free bun). And no you are not crazy. Cowfish is a collision of gourmet American Burgers and Japanese-style sushi. This place is as funky as it sounds and a great place to check out on your vacation.

Traveling with a gluten allergy is definitely a bit more challenging, but it just requires a little more legwork and inquiry during the process. The good news is it’s definitely doable! While Universal definitely doesn’t offer the best or even the largest variety of gluten-free options of all the Orlando theme parks, they at least have worked hard in recent years to improve their options for visitors.

Hopefully, this helps you navigate some of the food options while at Universal so you can take your mind off the safe food options and spend more time making wonderful memories with you and your family! Enjoy adventuring!
