Main Street Bakery Inspired Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Jar

This gift in a jar recipe is inspired by the many fond memories of enjoying chocolate chip cookies and drinking hot chocolate with my daughter at the Nestle Tollhouse-sponsored Main Street Bakery in Walt Disney World. Sadly, this bakery is no longer with us, but this recipe will help you to recapture some of the magic and share it as a gift with others.

Instructions

  1. Using a flour sifter, sift the flour, baking soda, and salt into a small mixing bowl.
  2. Place the flour mixture into the 1-quart canning jar.
  3. Layer chocolate chips, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in the order listed in the recipe, pressing firmly after each layer.
  4. Seal the jar with the lid.
  5. Decorate with fabric and ribbon.
  6. Attach the following recipe: Preheat oven to 375° F. Using a handheld mixer, beat 3/4 cup of softened butter or margarine, 1 large egg, and 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl until well blended. Stir in the cookie mix and chopped nuts (optional) by hand, breaking apart any clumps. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto an ungreased rimless baking sheet. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until the cookies are golden brown. Cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before moving to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
